As a member of (Massachusetts) Governor Baker’s Special Commission to establish a Pain Management Program, I have been an Opioid Sparing Surgeon for over 5 years.  To that extent, I use all available options to help my patients avoid opioids after major orthopedic surgery.  The ioverao technology is one such tool.  My total knee patients who receive the ioverao therapy use significantly fewer opioids than those that didn’t.  The ioverao treatment is now considered a  standard of care in my patients who are having a total knee replacement surgery.

“For the past few years, I have been using the iovera° technology to treat my patients suffering from chronic pain.  I find this to be a viable non-opioid alternative to treat pain.”

The ioverao technology (system) has significantly changed the way I treat patients with chronic or acute knee pain in my practice.  It has helped in significantly improving patient recovery times after total knee replacement surgery.  It has also reduced opioid dependence in these patients after surgery.  Treatment with the iovera system has helped me buy time in my chronic pain patients, and in patients who are not eligible for surgery.  I have developed an ultrasound imaging procedure that has helped me better target the nerves that are contributing to my patients’ knee pain.  Also, ultrasound imaging has reduced the treatment time and cost per patient.  My peers in my practice are beginning to incorporate this therapy their practices as well.

“I’ve been using ioveraº technology for the last several months and am thrilled with the outcomes I’ve seen thus far.  This technology is providing a significant non-opioid and non-systemic option for my patients suffering from knee pain.”

“I have the highest praise for Iovera technology. This product will become the standard of care for TKR patients.

I have done over 400 cases with iovera° now. Overall my patients use about half as much opiate pain medication post op. Many of them use only Tylenol after being discharged home. An unexpected benefit was the overall decrease swelling observed by me, my PA, and physical therapists. I’ve been asked frequently this past year what we have done differently. I’m happy to discuss iovera° with therapists, other surgeons, etc. I have about a dozen patients who have had TKR both with and without iovera°. Overwhelmingly, patients prefer the iovera° knee. This is sound technology and sound science. There is very little downside to trying. iovera° has become an invaluable tool for me in treatment of TKR and Rev TKR patients.”

“iovera° has greatly improved the quality of my total knee arthroplasty practice. My staff and I have been pleased to receive consistent patient feedback about the lack of post-operative pain. My patients have had a much faster recovery, and about a third of them haven’t needed any opioids beyond tramadol after their total knee arthroplasty.

Prospective new patients, physical therapists, nursing staff and other surgeons in my community have really taken notice of the impressive results my post-operative TKA patients have achieved with this technology. Due to rapidly developing demand from patients and the people involved in post-TKA patient care in my community, pre-TKA iovera° treatment has become the standard of care in my practice. Use it on a dozen patients, and unless your patient population is dramatically different than mine, the results will be overwhelmingly convincing.”

“This technology has allowed us to change our entire pain management protocol for TKAs; reducing the amount of opioids needed post-surgery and altering our physical therapy protocol to reach therapy goals earlier are just two of the resulting benefits.”

“Patients do get better when we do these (iovera°) nerve blocks. …Some of my patients are now at 4 months without recurrence of pain .”
