The iovera° System

The iovera° System

The iovera system comprises of a very compact, hand-held device, which seamlessly brings together several systems (hydraulic, electronic, etc.).

The extreme cold is delivered to the targeted nerve via Smart Tips.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is the cryogen used to create the extreme cold temperatures at the distal end of the Smart Tips.  (Note: the iovera system does not use nitrogen, which can deliver temperatures that cause irreversible nerve damage).

Canisters containing liquid nitrous oxide are inserted into the handpiece.

During each treatment cycle, the liquid nitrous oxide flows into the attached Smart Tip, where it expands into a gas.  This phase change from liquid to gas (also referred to as boiling) causes significant cold temperatures.  Nitrous oxide boils at -88oC.  So, the coldest temperatures that can be attained when using nitrous oxide as a cryogen is -88oC  Temperatures lower than -88oC cannot be reached with this cryogen.

All Smart Tips of the ioverao system are closed-end tips (needles).  The nitrous oxide that flows through the needles in the Smart Tip is safely vented through the handpiece as a gas.

Note: No fluid, chemical or drug is injected into the body during the procedure.

The iovera° Smart Tips

The iovera° Smart Tips

The iovera system comes with two Smart Tips.  These tips can deliver extreme cold when inserted into the targeted area in the body.

Smart Tip 307

Smart Tip 307 includes three 27-guage needles that are 7 mm long.  The duration of each treatment cycles with this tip is approximately 60 seconds.  This tip can be used to treat superficial nerves, such as the:

  • Anterior femoral cutaneous nerve
  • Lateral femoral cutaneous nerve
  • Patellar branches of the saphenous nerve
  • Ilioinguinal nerve
  • Occipital nerve

It is important to note that the skin warmer should be in contact with the skin during each treatment cyclec.

Smart Tips with Longer Needles

Smart Tip 155

This Tip includes a 55-mm long, blunt 22-guage needle.  The duration of each treatment cycle with this needle is 70 seconds.

The iovera° system includes two Smart Tips with long needles.  These needles designed to access and treat nerves that are deeper within the body.  These include:

  • Intercostal
  • Trigeminal
  • Suprascapular
  • Sacro-iliac
  • Posterior tibial

Imaging is suggested for placing these Smart Tips in close proximity to the targeted nerve.

Also, these Smart Tips include a clear double-line mark that indicates the minimum depth to which the needle should be inserted to achieve optimal treatment effect.

Smart Tip 190

Smart Tip 1 x 90 mm

This Tip includes a 90-mm long,  20-guage needle, which has a trochar tip.

Additionally, this tip allows for nerve stimulation, which further confirms nerve location and improves accuracy of treatment.  The duration of each treatment cycle with this needle is 105 seconds.
